What should I know about firefighter jobs and tasks around AFFF?
AFFF records differ for municipal firefighters, airport rescue crews, military firefighters, instructors, mechanics and industrial brigades.
Quick answer
A job title alone does not show what a firefighter handled. The useful history names the work: applying foam to a fuel fire, training with it, filling or flushing a tank, maintaining a crash truck, testing a hangar system, cleaning gear, or working beside those tasks. Career, volunteer, military, airport and industrial records are kept by different offices.

Write the task, not only the title
NIOSH notes that occupation and work activity affect which PFAS a worker may encounter and how contact may occur. Record whether you were on the nozzle, pump, apparatus, flight line, training staff, maintenance crew or cleanup. Add how often the task happened and whether it was an emergency, scheduled test or drill.

Where each record may be held
Personnel files may sit with a city, county, airport authority, military service or private employer. Training certificates may be with a state fire marshal or academy. Apparatus service and foam-purchase records may be with logistics or fleet maintenance. Safety data sheets may be with the safety office. List the office even if you do not have the file.

Is turnout gear the same issue as AFFF?
No. PFAS may appear in several fire-service settings, but foam use and protective gear are different facts and should be recorded separately.
