What should I know about where AFFF exposure records may exist?
Fire stations, airports, military bases, training grounds and industrial sites keep different AFFF records. See what to write down and who may hold it.
Quick answer
An AFFF exposure history starts with place, task and time, not with a conclusion. A fire department may have training and apparatus logs. An airport may have aircraft-rescue training records. A military base may have duty assignments and environmental files. An industrial site may have safety data sheets and incident records. The names of the site and unit make those records easier to find.

Name the setting before the product
People often remember white foam but not a brand. Start with the department, station, base, airport, academy, refinery, shipyard or tank farm. Add the unit, crew, job title and the years you were there. Those facts point toward personnel records, training files, apparatus logs, purchase records and safety data sheets without asking you to identify a chemical from memory.
- Fire department or academy: station, apparatus, crew, drill type and training officer.
- Airport or military site: airfield, unit, flight line, hangar system and crash-rescue assignment.
- Industrial site: employer, plant area, fire brigade, tank or foam system and safety office.

Living nearby is a different record trail
A work history and a residential history should not be blended. Someone who lived near a base, airport or plant may need old addresses, leases, school records and public water reports. Someone who handled foam at work may need duty, payroll, training and equipment records. Keeping the two tracks separate makes the record clearer and avoids assuming one route of exposure.
- Write every address and the dates you lived there.
- Keep the name of the water provider and any notice it sent.
- Do not use a map alone as proof of what reached one person.
