In Houston, the Houston Police Department usually works crashes inside the city, and Harris County agencies handle the rest. Check on everyone, call 911 if someone is hurt, and stay out of traffic. HPD writes the crash report for most crashes inside Houston. You can ask HPD for a copy, or buy the state copy from TxDOT and skip the trip downtown.

The Houston Police Department says accident reports need several days of processing before the public can get them. If you call the next morning and nothing is there, that is normal. Keep the incident number the officer gave you so the search is easier later.

HPD says you must provide at least two of the following: the date of the accident, the location, and the name of a driver or party involved. Send the incident number as well if you have it. Have your notes and photos in front of you when you ask.

You can buy the report online, mail a request with payment to the HPD Records Division at 1200 Travis, or come in person to the first floor there. A full copy by mail or in person needs the department's H.B. 2633 form, which HPD posts in English and in Spanish.

Houston crash reports also go to TxDOT, so you can search the state Crash Report Purchase Portal instead. That helps when you are not sure whether city police or another agency wrote your report, and the copy reaches you by email.

Federal fatal-crash counts, 2022 to 2024
That is 13.6% of every fatal crash the federal file records in the state over the same three years.
These are crashes in which at least one person died within 30 days, as counted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. They are not a count of all crashes, injuries, insurance claims or lawsuits, and most crashes are not in this file at all.
The counts are not adjusted for population, road miles or how much people drive, so they cannot say one place is more dangerous than another. A crash appearing here does not show who was at fault, whether anyone was insured or whether anyone has a claim.

Contact the HPD Records Division and give at least two details: the date, the location, or a name of someone involved. You can request it by mail with payment, in person at the downtown counter, or buy the copy online. Reports need several days of processing first.
Constable Precinct 8 deputies patrol 36 miles of Harris County toll road between the I-10 East Freeway and the Gulf Freeway. The county page says they are first responders for all incidents there, including traffic accidents. If your crash was on a toll road, ask which agency is writing the report.
