Each page names the agency that holds the report, links its official request page, and shows the federal fatal-crash record for the state.
Where the numbers come from
Federal counts, with their limits stated
A fatal crash is a FARS qualifying motor-vehicle traffic crash in which at least one person died within 30 days. State and county totals count every FARS fatal crash coded to that place in the period, regardless of road. A county's share of the state divides the county count by the state count; it is composition context, not an exposure-adjusted rate. A large-truck-involved fatal crash contains at least one FARS medium/heavy truck body type over 10,000 pounds GVWR or an unknown medium/heavy truck type.
- FARS covers fatal crashes only. It is not a count of all crashes, injuries, claims or lawsuits.
- A county's share of the state is not adjusted for population, road miles, traffic volume or exposure and cannot compare risk between places.
- Crash or truck involvement does not establish fault, negligence, causation or legal eligibility.
- Annual and submetric aggregate cells are unsuppressed and may be zero through four. No event-level record or direct identifier is published.
- The dataset omits event points, exact times, case identifiers, VINs, plates, people and narratives.

Where do the crash numbers on these pages come from?
From the national fatal-crash files published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for 2022 through 2024. They count crashes in which at least one person died, not all crashes or injuries, and they are not adjusted for population or driving, so they cannot rank places by danger.
