Nassau and Suffolk counties
On Long Island your report usually comes from the Nassau County Police or the Suffolk County Police, and sometimes from a village or town department or from state police Troop L. Call 911 if anyone is hurt. Trade insurance and plate numbers. Note the exact exit or cross street. Ask the officer which department is writing it. Long Island has two county police departments plus many village and town departments. Which one wrote your report decides where you ask for it.

Nassau County Police put accident reports online. To pull yours you need the report number, or a first and last name plus the date, or a first and last name plus the accident street. Accidents before April 1, 2012 are not online, and a copy can also be ordered from the New York DMV.

Suffolk County Police sell crash reports through the online service named on their own page, which adds a convenience fee. To find your report online you must answer at least two of these: a driver license number, a license plate number, or a date of birth involved in the crash.

You can also mail the Central Records Section at police headquarters on Yaphank Avenue in Yaphank, with a self addressed stamped envelope. Send your name and address, the crash date, the crash location, the Central Complaint number if you have it, and the drivers' names.

If state police wrote your report, they send it to the DMV electronically and point you to the DMV for a copy. Use the DMV online crash report portal or mail form MV-198C. Their page says reports are generally available within about a month.

Federal fatal-crash counts, 2022 to 2024

These are crashes in which at least one person died within 30 days, as counted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. They are not a count of all crashes, injuries, insurance claims or lawsuits, and most crashes are not in this file at all.
The counts are not adjusted for population, road miles or how much people drive, so they cannot say one place is more dangerous than another. A crash appearing here does not show who was at fault, whether anyone was insured or whether anyone has a claim.

Nassau County Police put accident reports online. You need the report number, or your first and last name with the crash date, or your first and last name with the street where it happened. Accidents before April 1, 2012 are not online, and a copy can also be ordered from the New York DMV.
Suffolk County Police say crash reports go online for purchase about a week after the crash. A certified copy from Central Records takes about three to four weeks by mail. Certified copies for recent crashes can be picked up at Central Records on weekday business hours.
It depends on who responded. State police Troop L serves Nassau and Suffolk, and county police cover much of the same ground. If state police wrote it, they send it to the New York DMV and you request the copy from the DMV. If county police wrote it, ask that county.
The Suffolk County Police say interpretation services are available for people with limited English, and their online reports page gives a department phone number and email for questions. You can also start a free case check in Spanish, and you can call or text.
