Sacramento police sell copies of their own motor vehicle accident reports online or by mail. Traffic reports go to authorized people under Vehicle Code section 20012.

The department posts how soon a motor vehicle accident report is usually available, counted from the date of the accident. If yours has not shown up by then, the page tells you to contact the Records Division.

To ask by mail, send the type of report, the report number if known, the date and location, the parties and their addresses, the plate number, and, for an insurance company, the policy number. Mail it to the Records Report Requests address on Freeport Boulevard.

The city says the entire traffic accident report may be released unless it is marked hit and run or fatal. In those cases the department releases it only after the Traffic Section approves it, or after the waiting period the page sets.

Federal fatal-crash counts, 2022 to 2024
That is 4.7% of every fatal crash the federal file records in the state over the same three years.
These are crashes in which at least one person died within 30 days, as counted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. They are not a count of all crashes, injuries, insurance claims or lawsuits, and most crashes are not in this file at all.
The counts are not adjusted for population, road miles or how much people drive, so they cannot say one place is more dangerous than another. A crash appearing here does not show who was at fault, whether anyone was insured or whether anyone has a claim.

The department says a report is typically available a set number of days from the date of the accident, and its page lists that range. If yours is not online by then, the page tells you to contact the Records Division. Hit and run and fatal reports are held longer.
The department says an officer takes a report at the scene when someone is seriously injured or dies, a driver is under the influence, a driver flees and the plate is obtained, or city property is damaged. Otherwise, you may be filing the report yourself for insurance.
The city lists the time and location by address or cross streets, your plate number, your driver license number, your insurance company and policy number, the names, addresses, and phones of your passengers, and the same details for the other drivers and passengers if you know them.
