Last-mile and box trucks
What should I know about delivery van and box truck crashes: records beyond the driver?
Delivery routes, apps, scans, dispatch, employer, contractor, rental and vehicle data may exist even when a van has no visible US DOT number.
Quick answer
A delivery van or box truck may leave a business record even when it has no visible US DOT number. Route assignments, app events, package scans, dispatch messages, GPS, telematics, camera video, rental agreements and employer or contractor records can identify the trip and company structure. Save logos, plates, unit numbers, uniform details and the exact time and location without assuming the brand on the package employed the driver.

Capture the route evidence
Note the delivery company shown on the vehicle, any separate contractor name, plate, unit number and package or stop information visible after the crash. Doorbell, business and traffic cameras may show the vehicle. The company system may record login, dispatch, route sequence, scans, stop completion and location events.
- Vehicle logo, plate, unit and contractor marking
- Route, stop, package scan and app events
- Camera, GPS, telematics and dispatch

No DOT number does not mean no company record
Whether federal motor-carrier rules apply depends on the operation and vehicle, not on whether a person happened to see a number at the scene. A local van may instead be identified through registration, rental, employer, contractor and route records. Keep the federal lookup as one branch, not the only branch.
- Registration and rental agreement
- Employer, contractor and route platform
- Carrier lookup when a US DOT number exists

Questions
Short answers that stand on their own
What if there was no US DOT number?
Keep the plate, VIN if safely available, logo, unit number, rental markings and crash report. Other business and registration records may identify the operation.
Does a delivery brand always employ the driver?
No. The driver may work for a contractor or another company. Record every name and let the records show the relationship.
A quick reality check
What this page can and cannot tell you
This page cannot decide how the crash happened, who was at fault, whether a carrier controlled the trip, whether a particular record exists, insurance coverage, case value or a legal deadline. Public carrier data and vehicle categories are starting points for finding records; they do not establish responsibility or legal eligibility. A licensed attorney must review the complete facts and current law.
